The importance of psychological safety in our daily lives

We live in a world full of challenges and obstacles, where everyone seeks a place to be ourselves without fear or judgment. In this sense, psychological safety plays a fundamental role in fostering spaces where all individuals feel comfortable and free to express themselves. In this article, we will explore what psychological safety is, why it is important for people’s well-being, and how each individual can contribute to creating safer spaces in our daily lives.

What is psychological safety? It refers to the feeling of emotional well-being and confidence we experience when interacting with our environment. It is the certainty that we can be authentic individuals, express our ideas, opinions, and emotions without fear of being judged, ridiculed, or punished. In a psychologically safe environment, people feel valued, respected, and supported in their vulnerabilities.

When we are in psychologically safe environments, our mental and emotional health is strengthened. We feel more motivated, creative, and committed to our tasks and relationships. Psychological safety fosters trust, mutual respect, and openness to new ideas and perspectives. Moreover, it contributes to the development of healthy relationships, both personally and professionally.

It is important to reflect on this concept and the role that each person plays in creating safe spaces in society. So how can we contribute to psychological safety?

Fostering empathy and active listening:

Paying genuine attention to the people around us, demonstrating interest and understanding. Validating their emotions and providing a safe space for them to express themselves without fear.

Communicating assertively:

Expressing our thoughts and feelings clearly, directly, and respectfully. Avoiding aggression or passivity in our communication, promoting a balanced and open exchange of ideas.

Promoting diversity and inclusion:

Valuing and respecting individual differences, fostering equitable participation of all people in the spaces we interact. Recognizing and challenging prejudices and stereotypes that can limit the psychological safety of others.

Providing constructive feedback:

Offering comments and critiques constructively, focusing on expressing how we perceive the situation and why we believe there is an opportunity for improvement, empowering the growth and development of individuals. Creating an environment where feedback is welcomed and seen as an opportunity for learning.

Psychological safety is a fundamental pillar in our daily lives. By creating safe spaces, we contribute to the emotional and mental well-being of all individuals. Through empathy, assertive communication, diversity and inclusion, constructive feedback, and trust, we can build environments where everyone feels valued and respected in their individuality. Let us remember that each person has the power to make significant changes in creating safe spaces. As Brené Brown says, “Vulnerability is not winning or losing; it’s having the courage to show up and be seen for who we truly are.”
