The Game of Exclusion within Inclusion

When we talk about inclusion, we refer to the openness and acceptance of all individuals, regardless of their origin, gender, sexual orientation, ability, religion, or any other differentiating characteristic. It is a beautiful and necessary concept in our society, but unfortunately, it can fall into subtle traps that limit its true scope.

Exclusion can manifest itself in various forms, even within spaces that self-identify as inclusive. It can occur when certain voices are ignored or minimized, when stereotypes are reinforced, or when prejudices are perpetuated without questioning them. It can also happen when certain groups or identities are privileged over others, creating divisions and gaps.

It is crucial to understand that inclusion is not a zero-sum game. It is not about “who deserves more” or a clash between different identities. True inclusion is built from an intersectional perspective, recognizing that individuals can experience multiple forms of discrimination and that their struggles are valid and necessary.

In this game of exclusion within inclusion, we must be aware of our privileges and learn to use them to break down barriers instead of reinforcing them. It is not enough to open doors; we must ensure that all voices are heard and valued. We must question our own beliefs and prejudices and be willing to change and grow.

The real challenge lies in recognizing that inclusion is not a final destination but a constant journey of learning and evolution. We must be willing to face the tensions and challenges that arise when confronting our own ideas and privileges. Only then can we create truly inclusive spaces where every person feels safe and valued.
