To provide some context, rainbowwashing is the use of icons, images, or symbols with the colors of the LGBTQIA+ flag in promoting products and services as a strategy to show a commitment to inclusivity of the LGBTQIA+ community, without having a genuine intention of supporting it.
On the other hand, queerbaiting is showing attitudes of romantic and/or sexual attraction with patterns that match stereotypes of the LGBTQIA+ community as a means of attracting audiences, without any real attraction or intention of adequately representing the community.
Both rainbowwashing and queerbaiting are harmful practices that trivialize the struggle for equality and inclusion of the LGBTQIA+ community. Both practices are deceptive and trivialize the fight for equal rights and inclusion of the LGBTQIA+ community.
It’s important that brands and people commit to authentic and respectful inclusion of the LGBTQIA+ community. This means not only showing commitment during June but committing to equity and inclusion at all times.
Brands should also work internally to take active measures that demonstrate a genuine commitment to the LGBTQIA+ community, creating safe working spaces with equal opportunities for all people, cultivating an inclusive culture that transcends into their customer service and generates a positive impact on society.
